Short answer: Zermatt is Switzerland's best all-round ski resort: about 360 km of runs when combined with Cervinia in Italy, skiing up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3,883 m, glacier snow from autumn to spring, and a car-free village. It's on the Ikon Pass (7 days). Stay at Mont Cervin Palace or The Omnia for a spa after skiing.

Zermatt is the resort most people picture when they think "skiing in the Alps" — and it lives up to it. The Matterhorn towers over almost every run, the snow is high and reliable, and the car-free village has horse-drawn sleighs and electric taxis instead of traffic.

Who it's for

Intermediates and up, food lovers (the mountain restaurants are some of the best in the Alps), and mixed groups with non-skiers — read Zermatt for non-skiers.
