Called the "Queen of the Mountains," the Rigi is where Swiss mountain tourism began in the 1800s — Europe's first mountain railway opened here in 1871. Today it's also the easiest hike & soak day in the country.
The classic day
- Boat from Lucerne to Vitznau across Lake Lucerne.
- Cogwheel train from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm. At the summit you can see the Alps, the Black Forest and a dozen lakes on a clear day.
- Walk down to Rigi Kaltbad via Rigi Staffel (about 1–1.5 hours). Wide, gentle path, panoramic the whole way.
- Soak at the Rigi Kaltbad Mineral Baths, designed by Mario Botta, with an outdoor pool looking out over the Alps.
- Cable car down to Weggis and boat back to Lucerne.

Is the Swiss Travel Pass valid on the Rigi?
Yes. The Rigi railways are included in the Swiss Travel Pass, which makes Rigi one of the best-value mountain days in Switzerland.
Do I need to book the Rigi Kaltbad mineral baths?
Not usually. Buy a ticket on site. Weekends and sunny winter days are busiest; hotel guests get easier access.
Can I hike Rigi in winter?
Yes. Groomed winter walking paths connect Rigi Kulm and Rigi Kaltbad, and the mineral bath is open year-round — it's one of the best winter activities for non-skiers.
Rigi or Pilatus?
Pilatus is more dramatic, with steeper cliffs; Rigi has gentler walking and the mineral bath. For a hike and soak, Rigi wins.
